martrin

Martrin is a French commune located in the department of Aveyron.

The architectural heritage of the town includes a building protected as a historic monument: the Notre-Dame-de-Septembre church, listed in 1927.

Near the village is the sanctuary chapel dedicated to Saint Clement.

Martrin was a former hospital commandery of the Hospitallers of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Several buildings bear witness to this:

  • The bell tower built in 1392 served as a refuge for the population in times of war.
  • The church, juxtaposed with the Tower, is more recent. It contains in one of its chapels a tomb from the end of the 15th century, that of Penavayre de Sales, commander of the order of Hospitallers.
  • The castle, rebuilt in the 15th century and nicknamed the Commanderie, has preserved most of its rooms.
